Google is all busy with releasing new updates for the Android OS. First it was the Honeycomb 3.0 and the latest is the 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The update has not been released yet and is yet to reach your devices but one of the available launchers for Android lets you experience the update well ahead of its official release.
ICS Launcher or Ice Cream Sandwich Launcher, as the name suggests, is a launcher replacement that will make your interface completely look alike the 4.0 update. Although one might not find anything so strikingly different but it is worth a download as it is available for free on the android market.
As you can see the interface is no different but it has some interesting features. The screen here has three buttons at the bottom, just above the physical buttons. There three buttons, from the left, are for refreshing the launcher, switching between the home screen pages and opening the recent apps respectively.
Press the rightmost button at the bottom and you can see all the recent apps along with a large thumbnail. This makes it look attractive a bit.
As normal as like any other launcher, this one also lets you add shortcuts and widgets to the home screen by using the long pressing feature. From here you also have access to stock wallpapers and launcher settings.
The launcher also features a set of unique wallpapers that you can apply to your home screen.
Additional settings of the launcher can be accessed by press the menu key, navigating to More section and then selecting Launcher Settings. One can also take a look at all the launcher wallpapers, online tutorials and can also refresh the launcher.
Inside the launcher settings you have a number of sections like desktop, drawer, gesture, appearance and system settings.
Under desktop settings you can hide icon labels, enable auto fit to screen option. Also one can alter the number of rows and columns on the desktop. Desktop scrolling speed and over bounce can also be altered from here. Under Drawer settings you can hide drawer labels and set the number of columns for both portrait and landscape modes.
Under Gesture Settings you can set the default action for gesture up and down actions. Available actions are do nothing, move to default screen, show previews, show hide statusbar and open/close notifications.
From Appearance settings you can pick a highlight colour when an icon is focused upon or clicked upon.
Under System settings you can can change the default launcher orientation, enable wallpaper scrolling and also activate the System Memory feature that gives the launcher a high priority over running apps so that it can work smoothly.
Other sections include Custom icon packs and Launcher utilities. One can change the default custom pack to ICS 4.0 or vice versa from Custom Icon Pack section while from Launcher Utilities one can reboot the launcher in case it is not working well.
