Generally people have a misconception that higher the power of the charger the faster it will charge their iPhone, that it the reason many of the users have mentioned on the apple discussion forum that their iPhone gets charged pretty fast with the help of iPad charger as compared to their iPhone charger. The other misconception users have is regarding the usage of the chargers, whether iPad charger can be used to charge iPhone or an iPhone charger be used to charge iPad. We will discuss about this in this post.

I agree that iPhone charger is rated at 5 Watts and iPad charger is rated 10 Watts, but you should know that charging speed depends on the drawing capacity of the device. The maximum capacity for iPhone to draw current is till 5 Watts, so if you will use any charger which is rated below 5 Watts (charging through USB cable attached to your laptop gives 2.5 Watts) then the charging speed of iPhone will decrease but if you will use any charger which is rated more than 5 Watts then it will not charge any faster that your iPhone charger because iPhone has maximum current drawing capacity till 5 Watts, so when connected to a 10 Watt charger it will draw current only on 5 Watts.

It is always suggested that you should charge your device with a low powered charging source, firstly it will take lot more time and secondly it barely damages your battery. Keeping this in mind, you should not charge your iPad with your iPhone charger (as iPad charger is rated 10 Watts and iPhone charger is rated at 5 Watts) and you should not charge your iPhone with USB cable attached to your laptop. So, you can use your iPad charger to charge iPad and iPhone both.

If you don’t agree then you can check the facts that iPad will 4 times longer when charger with USB cable connected to your Laptop and 2 times longer when charged with an iPhone charger. Similarly there will be not time difference when an iPhone is charged with an iPad charger and it will 2 times longer when charged with USB cable connected to your system.
