Google Now, or rather more excitingly called Siri-competitor, is undoubtedly one of the most mentioned apps recently. No matter what, it was an app by Google and therefore deserves that much of attention. The app has been released along side Android 4.1 and now its available as an update for iOS and Android. However i used it on an iPhone 3GS my experiences with the apps were quiet satisfying (sometimes overwhelming).
Downloading Google Now
The Google Now is not available as a separate app but it is baked inside the Google search app. If you are on iOS you can download it from iTunes store without a penny. Once downloaded you need not to do any settings in the app and this is why it is unique. Keeping it simple, it displays relevant informations to you without asking to it.
Using Google Now
The first time you open the Now, you will see nothing special but a search window with options to search through voice or pictures or the traditional text based search. Below are the group of nicely stacked cards that you need to look at. Slide up with your fingers on that stack and you will be watching the cards.
These cards are in the pieces of relevant informations needed at a particular point of time. And as mentioned before, it gets displayed without you asking for it. Google scans through your emails, contacts, calendar and your location and displays informations in the form of cards at right time and at right place. Like for me it displayed a birthday reminder of a friend with a link to his email and picture. Based on my interests it also displayed a recent article about samsung Galaxy S4 at ZDnet.
Control which cards to show up
However there is a setting through which you can control cards variety based on your interest. Tap the setting button on the bottom of screen where cards end. Enable or disable things such as Weather, Next Appointment, Flights email, birthdays, movies and everything else.
Also if you want to tweak some setting of a particular card simply tap the i button on the right hand corner. Like for settings of a News card there are options like to set your interest level in it to High, Medium or Low.
Google Now does a nearly perfect job when it comes to switching between the different time zones. If you are at a time zone other than your home it will display card with your time at your home. (But for that you need to be in a different time zone.) Currency converters and translate facilities are another interesting cards. The sports card is limited to the international events and do not extend support to extremely popular IPLs in india.
Being used it extensively for few days i found there was not any reason to why not to use this app. Yes initially there will be less cards showing and there is not any option to increase the number of visible cards. So better leave it to soft Sherlock Holmes when to display informations and i am sure you will be moreover pleased.
