[How to] Make iPhone Usable By an Autism, Low Vision or Blind Users on iOS 6

We all have given our iPhone handset to a child as he would have asked for it because they have to play a game or see some pictures or take a photo from your phone. But once they press the button at point of time they comeback to the home screen and now they can navigate to anything from your Messages, Emails, Contacts or some application and can access your private data that you never intended anyone to see especially a child.

Well you don’t have to worry about that anymore with your iPhone anymore as the new version of your iOS comes with a feature known as Guided Access which will allow you to grant the access of a specific application to someone without the navigation option out of the app using the home button.

Steps to Use Guided Access on your iOS 6

Here’s how you can do it

IMG_1195

This is main screen of your iPhone. You can now unlock your phone by sliding across it.

IMG_1196

After you will unlock your iPhone this is how your iPhone’s screen will look like. Now tap on the grey colored icon which says Settings and also has a red outline in the above screen.

IMG_1197

Inside Settings you will find an option which says General with a red outline at the bottom of the screen. Just tap on that.

IMG_1198

Inside General there is an option Accessibility with a red outline at the bottom of the screen. Just tap on that.

IMG_1199

Inside Accessibility there is an option of Guided Access with a red outline at the bottom of the screen. Just tap on that.

IMG_1200

Inside Guided Access there is a Guided Access toggle to turn it ON with a red outline at the top of the screen. Just slide it to turn it ON. After you turn Guided Access ON and you have to put an application into Guided Access Mode just press the Home button thrice simultaneously when you are inside the application.

So here i considered the example of a game that i was playing. In order to put  it into Guided Access mode you can triple click on the home button and the below screen will open.

152_0252

The above screen opens up which has two buttons on the top Cancel on the top left hand corner and Start at the top right hand corner. So if you want to start the Guided Access on this app you should press Start on the top right hand corner and if you pressed the buttons by mistake you can always cancel it using the Cancel button on the top left hand corner.

152_0253

The above screen opens up when you will press on the Options button on the bottom left hand corner in the previous screen. You can also control the touch as well as the Motion using toggles together or individually.

152_0256

After you have set all the options that you want and you press Start button present on the top right hand corner the above screen opens up which will allow you to set a password in case someone uses the Home button to come out of the App in the Guided access.

152_0274

The above notification comes after you have entered the password and pressed on Go.

152_0259

You can also pause the services in between using the Home button. When you press it thrice simultaneously the above screen will open which has two buttons on the top two corners End and Resume. The End button will end the Guided access and Resume button will resume the Access from the point where we paused it.

152_0265

The Guided Access feature also allows you to disable a part of the screen which you think is of no use to the user. The disabled part appears to have diagonal lines in it.

IMG_1228

When you need to finish the Guided access just press the Home button thrice and enter the password that you entered the first time while you got access to the Guided access option for an Application.

Guide To Cut & Trim Micro-SIM To Make Nano-SIM

With the coming of iPhone4 the size of the normal SIM was reduced to Micro-SIM, this size of SIM has not been adopted by many phones at present but at-least some of the new models like HTC One X has started using this type of SIM. The main purpose behind reducing the thickness and of a SIM is to provide more space for the important hardware available inside the phone which can help in enhancing the user-experience.

image

This was one of the main reasons why Apple introduced ‘lightning’ as an 8-pin dock, they always intend to reduce the space occupied by these ‘mandatory but not so useful’ features and that is the reason now they have introduced the SIM size to Nano-SIM. The reduction in the size of a Micro-SIM was a huge difference but there was some plastic remaining at the boundary of the chip (though it was very less but still) Apple decided to go ahead with this idea and use only SIM Chip on their phones.

image

As you can see the screenshot mentioned above, you will only chip on a the Nano-SIM and it is comparatively much harder to create a Nano-SIM as compared to micro-SIM because only one mistake will damage your chip and then it will be spoilt. You can see the specifications of Nano-SIM in the screenshot mentioned below and you also click here to that page and read them. These standards of Nano-SIM are given by ETSI (European Telecommunication Standards Institute), which is a non-profit organization and approves the standards of all telecom related hardware.

Now let me tell you that how you can create a Nano-SIM from a micro-SIM. I will recommend you to try this on a dummy SIM and then come to the original one.

  • First of all make sure you have a length measuring device, a very sharp pair of scissors (very important) and sandpaper. Make sure that you can have a clean hand when it comes to cutting through scissors, don’t even think of making a mistake or else be prepared to get another SIM.
  • Now the acquired size of the SIM should be 12.3 mm wide, 8.8 mm high and 0.67mm thick. To decrease the width and high of the SIM cut all the plastic part from the borders of the micro-SIM.
After removing the plastic measure the height and width of the SIM, the dimensions will almost match with + or – 0.05 inches error, but that does not matter much.
  • The difficult part comes when you are about to reduce the thickness of the SIM, the thickness problem makes me presume that like Micro-SIM converter we will be able to get a normal machine which will be able to convert Micro-SIM to Nano-SIM and so this is the only possible method which will help you.
So, flip the SIM and rub the back side of the SIM on the sand paper and after every while keep on checking the thickness and be careful as you should not spoil the chip from back.
Create a Nano-SIM

You can take a look at video describing everything step by step. Please let us know how was your first experience making a Nano-SIM (even though if you ruined it).

How To Get Over Apple Maps Problem in iOS6

Its seems that Apple only focused adding new features on a map which are not available on Bing or Google Maps, Yes Apple can help you see the 3D images of the buildings but while adding all these feature it forgot the most basic requirement of a Map, which is its basic data of buildings and roads and other important destinations. Few days it was reported by Boomerang that Apple Maps failed to locate their headquarters.

image

If this is the degree of problem in USA then you can very well imagine about the grade of data available on their maps for other countries. So, we tried to find a solution to this problem and assembled them into this post.

Latest Updates related to Google Maps for iOS6

Hacker, helps to get Google Maps of iOS5 on iOS6

Well it has been reported by one of the tweets of Ryan Petrich, that he was able to post iOS Google Maps on iOS 6 and in the tweet he also posted a video, which is available below the screenshot of the tweet.
But the problem is that it really crashes as of now and users will be able to use it, once a handy jailbreak comes out for iOS6. At present the jailbreak is available for the A4 device users (till iPhone 4), but it is not simple and requires ‘SSH’ with a remote computer, which might make most of the users uncomfortable.
Anyways as soon as Google Maps gets stable over the platform, they will put it on Cydia.

image

Google is already working on Google Maps (new version for iOS6)

Another important news regarding Google News has been reported that they have already submitted the application for Google Maps on their App Store and they believe that they might get the verification done by November.

Solution and Alternative to problems of Apple Maps

Solution: Google Maps Web App

Well as soon as the users upgraded their iPhones to iOS6, this was the first remedy which came up on internet for the resolution of this issue and it is the most common solution opted by the users. For this you will go the Safari Browser and then visit maps.google.com. You will see the screenshot mentioned below.

image

Now Just tap the highlighted area and you will see the options mentioned below, click the ‘Add to Home Screen’ option and then you will be able to launch Google Maps from your home-screen, but it will not work as it used to on your Google Maps app on iOS 5.1.1.

image

Its UI will be pretty clumsy and you might not find all the feature of the in-built app on this web-app widget. Well as per the latest news, Google Maps have already submitted their new version of Google Maps on Apple Store and now it is waiting for the approval which will be done by November, this year.

Alternative: Other Maps Application on App Store

Use other alternative application for Apple iOS. Some of the best applications are mentioned below:-

Free App:

Bing, after Google Maps this is the second best map service which is available for free and provides relevant data for all the countries around the globe. Other free application mainly focus on all the routes and traffic related information for US cities and states, but it will not be useful for the rest.
image
They are as follows:-

Paid Applications:

Sygic will be the best application for all, one of the reasons that it has different version of application specified for a specific country and thus it actually provides more detailed information as compared to Google Maps but it take huge amount of space on your mobile and it is little slow as compared to Google Maps.

image

image
You can see the screenshot above, showing the distribution of the versions of this application. Well this is the best paid application which can help you out, else all other free app have sufficient features to take you out of the Apple Maps trouble.

Well I hope these measures are enough to make sure that you get rid of the highly objected ‘Apple Maps’. Please let us know if you have more questions about it.
