Troubleshoot Guide For Absinthe – iPhone 4S and iPad 2 iOS 5.0.1 Jailbreak Errors & Bugs

Just a day back we made a detailed post on how to jailbreak untethered your iPhone 4S or iPad 2 running iOS 5.0.1 which you can read in order to jailbreak your new device. Now since it is a tool that is under development, bugs are bound to be there. As being reported by users a number of bugs are there which need to be addressed and through this post we will help you resolve these issues. The major bug being encountered by a majority is that when using absinthe they get a white screen and a server error.

The white screen stays for a while and while you are thinking that it is jailbreaking your device, it actually does nothing. If you are facing the same problem you can follow the guide given below to resort to a better state.

iOS 5.0.1 iPhone 4s, iPad 2 Absinthe White Screen Issue Fix

  • First connect your iPhone or iPad to the computer via the USB cable and open iTunes
  • Make a backup of your device to iTunes or iCloud
  • After finishing the backup, restore all data to your device
  • When finished restoring – Do Not Use The Back Up
  • Once again open Absinthe on your computer and click Jailbreak
  • The process will hopefully complete and after that the device will reboot and you can locate the Absinthe icon on springboard and open it.

If this does not work? Follow this:

If you are really stuck at the white screen when tapping on Absinthe icon present on the sprinboard then you have to follow the guide given below.

  • Firstly remove all the passwords: the wifi password, device unlock password etc
  • Now delete the Absinthe app from the springboard
  • Manually reboot the phone using (Home + Power Button Combination)
  • Once again connect your device to the computer via USB and re-run Absinthe and click on jailbreak
  • Wait for the program to complete its job.
  • IMPORTANT : Do not unplug the device and while it is connected, click on Absinthe icon on the springboard.
  • If it is a success then I believe you will be happy but in case you get the white screen again then IMMEDIATELY open settings, go to VPN and switch it ON.
  • It will give you an error and the device will reboot.
  • After this you will see a Cydia icon on the sprinboard that has replaced Absinthe icon and you are done.

For Other Issues Follow This

  • Run absinthe as Administrator on Windows. Mac users use Sudo: open terminal and type sudo ./ But before this make sure is situated in the same directory
  • After the absinthe jailbreak attempt fails, reboot your iPhone.
  • Close absinthe on your computer
  • Run Absinthe again on your computer and it should detect your device and will say that it noticed a jailbreak attempt failed and say it has Recovered
  • Reboot your device again and close the Absinthe program once again
  • After your device reboots, open Absinthe and click on jailbreak
  • Once it is complete and asks you to tap on Absinthe icon, DO NOT TAP. Now go to settings instead and open VPN and switch it on. You will get an error and the device will respring after a while.
  • If the device does not respring, follow the steps given above until it works. If it resprings successfully you will get Cydia on the springboard.

thanks for the troubleshooting tip. it worked for me. the key is to NOT tap the absinthe icon when it tells you too. instead, I’ve started VPN first. Once it respringed. it worked. thx again!

Please explain in detail about the exact procedure you followed(i hope you haven’t made any mistake while following the abovementioned steps). If you tell in detail it would be easier for us to understand.

firstly , is it safe to jailbreak … …secondly if i dont have a vpn and i dont want to configure it either …..will it be possible to jailbreak? ….. lastly …. if i get the absinthe icon on the springboard and i want to remove it…..can any1 tell me how 2 ?

Jailbreaking your apple device gives you the privileges that Apple has deprived you of. Actually it is not illegal but the things you can do after jailbreaking your device are. For example you will be able to download applications for free via Installous which are otherwise paid on App Store. Risks are also involved like you can mess up device’s operating system if you don’t perform jailbreak as guided but if you do it perfectly(it is an easy job and the latest jailbreaking tools make it even more easy) you will definitely start loving your apple device more.
VPN does not have any role in jailbreaking. All you need is a working internet connection,in some cases, so that the jailbreaking tool can do its job.
As far as the absinthe icon is concerned you can delete it as you do with other apps on your device. Long press to bring the icons into wiggle mode and then remove it.
An Important Piece of Advice: If you have an iPhone 4S or iPad 2 and want to jailbreak it using absinthe, please create a backup and restore it to stock iOS 5.x firmware and then jailbreak it. DO NOT RESTORE IT WITH THE CREATED BACKUP BEFORE JAILBREAKING
Feel free to ask if you have any more questions.

I’ve installed Absinthe onto my Mac, and it reads my Phone fine. But every single time i attempt to jailbreak it, it just sits on the loading bar and makes no progress… HELP!

Firstly you can try executing Absinthe as root user and then hit the jailbreak button. If it still stops responding after a while, i believe the only solution left is to do a fresh restore on your apple device using the latest firmware and then try jailbreaking it.
Follow This:
First create a backup of your device
Do a fresh restore with the latest firmware
Now jailbreak(it should work fine this time) and after you get Cydia on springboardm restore it with the backup.

I have done jailbreak with absinthe v4 after taking all defined steps. But I am facing a problem; when I click on application to open, it blink and then come on home screen. After multiple clicks it opens and run fine. Also I take my ipad2 screen on search window it hangs. And after a good while I can type the search. Can you help as I enjoy jb but facing minor issue?

I urn the program, conncet the ipad, it is recognised and I click Jailbreak, then I get: Connecting to device, then a second later it says you have previously tried to jailbreak and it failed. Recovery get completed, and then asks to unplug and re-plug. Do this, and the cycle then repeats itself!

Hi Kashish,

I am not able to get past the actual Absinthe application. I press jailbreak and it tells me to wait but nothing happens. The phone never goes into restore mode. Instead, I get a sync symbol up in the lefthand corner next to the carrier name. i’ve done soft resets but nothing seems to work. I am currently in the process of attempting to restore to factory settings. If that doesn’t work what should I do? Has this been a problem for anyone else that you know of?

Thanks in advance!

At times it happens that there is no sure shot solution to a problem and then we have to try different methods. As in your case you have mentioned that it recognizes the device but doesn’t proceed further and you have also tried soft resetting your device right? I believe even hard resetting your device would not be of much help. To my knowledge there are two possible solution:
First you can download a different version of Absinthe and then try jailbreaking it.
Second if nothing works for you i am afraid you will have to restore your device’s firmware to stock iOS 5.0.1 using iTunes, set up as NEW DEVICE, then follow the jailbreaking guide and when you are done restore it with the previously created backup.
Once again i want to say that there is no sure shot solution to this in our knowledge but if something helpful comes up i will definitely update the comments section.

I load the program on my Windows PC and plug in my iPhone 4s. It gets to a page that says “beginning jailbreak, this may take a while” and it never leaves this page. What am I forgetting to do or is my Windows Vista to blame?

Hello Mason,
You have not mentioned your problem in detail but i would still try to answer it. First of all i would like to tell you that the problem is probably because of the fact that when you run absinthe it first creates a backup of your device and then restores it. So if you have a large amount of data on your device you might end up wasting appreciable amount of time getting past the Beginning Jailbreak screen.
So i would recommend that you first create a backup, either on iTunes or iCloud, and then go to settings>General>Reset and select Erase All Content and Settings. Once it finishes you can try the procedure once again. Also make sure it does not have any active passcodes. Hopefully it will solve the problem as this is the root cause of the same.
Best Of Luck

Dude…I installed absinthe on my ipad2 5.0.1 …. Got absinthe on my spring board… Wen I open absinthe it’s like… Waiting for absinthe to complete…. N stuck up dere…. I Switched the VPN on too… But it’s still stuck up there…. What should I do???

Did you try the jailbreak on a clean phone? Did u restore it first? Did you remove all the passcodes? If No then it is likely to create some problems. If yes then you can try deleting the absinthe icon from the homescreen, reboot your device, re-jailbreak it and reach the ALMOST DONE stage, unplug device, open absinthe and keep launching it until it says could not open, now go to settings and try the VPN trick. It should work this time.

Although you have not stated whether you restored your devices to stock iOS 5.0.1 or not but i would still recommend restoring your device before carrying out jailbreaking.

I am having problems when I try to jailbreak. I open as administrator and the screen comes up but the jailbreak stays grey so I cant click on it. The phone is plugged into the computer, what can I do?

I jailbroke an iPhone and it worked fine. Then tried to update it and now it’s stuck on connect to iTunes and I’ve pressed the home and lock button and kept holding the home button and it just keeps going back to connect to iTunes. I want to know how I could fix this. Without using the Internet on the laptop that it’s connected to because I don’t have the Internet.

I am trying this on my 4s and the jailbreak goes fine but absinthe doesn’t install cydia and tells me to turn on vps but when I try to I get an error on my 4s what do I do?

Not sure what to do. I restored my iPhone from a backup (I’m on 5.0.1 on a 4S) that I made before the jailbreak, and now Absinthe is telling me the Device is already jailbroken although I don’t have a Cydia icon on my home screen. Any suggestions?

Did you restore the device from a backup BEFORE jailbreaking? If so please refer to the other comments where i have clearly stated that in order to have a successful jailbreak PLEASE use the stock state and DO NOT restore it with any backup before performing a jailbreak. You can probably delete the absinthe app and then try re-jailbreaking and if even that does not work, you will have to once again restore the device using the stock firmware.
After restoring just set up your 4s as a new device and do not use any backups. Jailbreak it and then restore it with a previously made backup.

I have followed the instructions under “For Other Issues Follow This” exactly however it does not respring like you say it should. You say to follow the steps above but what steps were you referring to?

Well William i mean that one has to repeat all the steps under the FOR OTHER ISSUES FOLLOW THIS section until his or her device resprings. You need to repeat the process again and again in order to get it working. Delete absinthe and jailbreak again, that’s all you can do.

I’ve deleted Absinthe icon on my phone and now I try to jailbreak it again, it doesn’t work. It said Recovery completed. If you want to retry jailbreaking, unplug your device and plug it back in. Please help.

In this situation, when it asks you to unplug and plug the device back, just do as it says but make sure you are quick enough. Just unplug and plug it back immediately and then try to re-jailbreak it. That’s the only way left, try it again and again. If it doesn’t work, try rebooting your device and jailbreaking it again.
You will have to re-run the jailbreaking tool over and over again in order to get it working.
I have suggested most of the times to use stock state for jailbreaking and have advised people to restore their devices in case they are facing any problem. In your case i am afraid you won’t be able to restore it to stock firmware as Apple has stopped signing iOS 5.0.1. So my friend the only option left with you is to keep trying.
If i do come across any other solution regarding your problem, i will definitely post a comment. Till then keep trying. Best of luck.

hey kashish
i came across an error with loading absinthe onto the phone 4s 5.0.1 9a405, i figured deleting the absinthe via phone and reinstalling it again will be the fix. however i cant seem to load absinthe on my phone once again. with windows i open up absinthe app hit jailbreak says it looks like i have already attempted to jailbreak, recovery completed. if i want to retry jb, unplug and plug back in. i unplug and plug back in i keep getting the same msg i tired the above post with restarting and closing the app with no luck any idea how to delete it fully on my phone/get the app icon back??

thanks in advance

You can try rebooting your device, your pc and switching the USB cable to another port. The problem you are facing is common but unfortunately the solution isn’t. The reason is that we don’t know at which step the process got messed up.
So according to me, as i said above, try rebooting everything and switch the cable to a different port and then try.Unfortunately this is the only solution left since Apple has stopped signing iOS 5.0.1, so you cannnot restore your device to stock firmware. However if you have your SHSH blobs saved and you have a stitched 5.0.1 IPSW you can restore it. In case you don’t have, you can reset your phone and then try the procedure.
Understand that the solution we have provided worked for many users while it didn’t work for some, including you. If we come across a better solution, we will not hesitate sharing it with you. In the meantime you can try starting from scratch. Best Of Luck

For me using the older Version of Absinthe did the trick, my device wasnt a clean restore, had a VPN stored, which i deleted after several attempts.

I got to the Absinthe icon, but clicking it only told me to wait, then press jailbreak which only brought up URL error…

No whitescreens, NO respring upon failed VPN connect to “jailbreak”

So i tried absinthe0.3 windows, everything fine XDXD

Hello, I have an Iphone 4s 5.0.1 jailbroken with the Absinthe. I just bought the phone a month ago, so it’s still underwarrenty. The problems I”m having are when the headset is plugged in and I am in a call, it will cutt off my call and start playing music and stopping and fastwarding the music by itself. I’ve used different headsets so I’m sure it’s the phone. In order to have the phone replaced I need to restore it to factory settings.

So far I’ve tried restoring, and it restored with the jailbrake and cydia still on there. I tried to erase all the content and Data and it didn’t work, it got stuck on the spinng wheel until I pressed the sleep and home; which brought me back to the phone still with cydia on it. I have alot of paid cydia apps and stuff, but I just want to get the phone restored to factory setting so I can get a phone thats not glitchy. PLease help. THanks for your time.
May or Epod 🙂

If you are so sure the problem is with the phone’s hardware, i would suggest upgrading to iOS 5.1 or 5.1.1 and then approaching the nearest Apple store. As far as Cydia is concerned, it won’t be removed unless you restore to stock iOS firmware.
One more piece of advice, once you restore your phone with the latest firmware and set it up as a NEW PHONE, please do not sync it with itunes as it will put back a part of the files that were present when you were running your 4s in the jailbroken state. It is very likely to alarm the people at Apple Store. So better restore to the latest firmware, set up your device as new, erase all content from under settings(precaution) and head to the nearest iWorld. Restoring will completely remove Cydia from your device so don’t worry, just connect your device to iTunes and restore it.
Just restore it to the latest firmware(5.1 or 5.1.1) using itunes and after erasing all the content you will be pretty much prepared.

Hello Kashish, I have successfully restored my Iphone to factory settings 🙂 thank you so much for your advice. I wouldn’t have tried that on my own. I can’t thank you enough 😀 have a great day 😉
